When firefighters bellowed "surf's up" in the wake of a small fire that started in the faculty kitchen of the Law School on April 21, they weren't kidding. After promptly dousing the stove fire that Tuesday evening, the sprinkler system proceeded to flood the faculty lounge and a conference room, both near the kitchen on the second floor. Wielding oversized squeegees afterward, firefighters pushed the water out of the lounge and onto the breezeway; it then poured down on Cooley Courtyard. The building's café, also on the first floor, as well as the faculty and student lounges, remain closed due to water damage. No injuries or major damage to equipment or academic materials was reported, and an official cost estimate for all the damages is still being determined. In the interim, the Law School has been providing grab-and-go food items through its regular vendor in one of its outdoor courtyards.
Every 10 years, since 1969, people who participated in the Stanford antiwar movement have returned to campus to see old friends and meet with current students to discuss peace and social justice issues. For their 40-year reunion, the activists will host several panels and discussions in Tresidder Union on Saturday and Sunday that will both look back on the events of April 3, 1969—the passionate protests, sit-ins, teach-ins and rallies related to the Vietnam War and human rights—and focus on foreign policy, the economy and social movements in the new era. The weekend kicks off with a reception on Friday at the Sheraton Palo Alto, where Mayor PETER DREKMEIER will give a welcome address at 7:30 p.m. Times and other information about events on campus, which are sponsored by the School of Education, can be found by going to http://www.a3m2009.org.
The Office for Religious Life will host its first-ever wedding fair on Saturday, May 2, starting at 10 a.m. Only couples with a Stanford affiliation are eligible to be married in Memorial Church, but the event is open to all. Come to meet the Rev. WILLIAM "SCOTTY" MCLENNAN, dean for religious life, and visit with wedding planners, floral designers, photographers and videographers. All faiths are welcome.
