Annual Wellness Fair to be held April 29
The university's annual Wellness Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, in the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation. Activities that will be available at the event for employees include health screenings, indoor rock-wall climbing, drawings for door prizes and exercising using Nintendo's Wii Fit.
Now in its fifth year, the fair is once again being hosted by the Stanford BeWell Team. Demonstrations are scheduled for those who want to learn about healthy foods, tai chi and other forms of exercise. Attendees also will be able to get a bike-safety check, test the level of protection of sunglasses and even find out if they might have sun-damaged skin.
The specific screenings to be offered at the event will measure blood pressure, body fat, bone density, lung capacity, cholesterol and blood sugar. To schedule an appointment in advance for a cholesterol test, go to http://www.wellcall.com. First-time users must register (password: stanford) and click on Wellschedule to reserve a time. The test does not require fasting beforehand.
The Stanford Blood Mobile will be parked on Galvez Street, near the recreation center, to take donations on site. For information about eligibility and to schedule an appointment, go to http://bloodcenter.stanford.edu and search by city for Stanford. Scheduling also may be done by calling 723-7819. Donors should eat and drink plenty of water beforehand, show up a few minutes early and plan on the entire appointment taking about 30 minutes.
Provost John Etchemendy has sent e-mails to staff and department heads across campus urging them to take time out of the workday to attend the fair. As in years past, the provost will be there again this year.
"While many campus activities have been curtailed in light of the recent economic downturn, the health and wellness of our faculty and staff remains a high priority during this difficult time," Etchemendy said in his e-mail to supervisors. "This has been a stressful year for everyone, particularly our staff, and so it is more important than ever that you encourage your staff members to attend."
