The afterlife of Leland Stanford Jr.
Cantor Center for Visual Arts staff members (L-R) Holly Gore, Jeri Yasukawa and Jeff Fairbairn worked together to install Splendid Grief: Darren Waterston and the Afterlife of Leland Stanford Jr., which opened April 15 and continues through July 5.
San Francisco artist Darren Waterston imbues his exhibition with the Victorian spirit, turning the gallery into a mourning parlor. He uses works from the museum’s collection, artifacts from Stanford University Libraries Special Collections and original works that he made for this exhibition. Leland Stanford Jr. died at 15 from typhoid fever. His parents, Leland and Jane Stanford, founded the university in his memory.
