MARTIN CARNOY, a faculty member since 1969, has been named the Vida Jacks Professor of Education. Carnoy, a professor of education and economics, was celebrated during a Nov. 2 reception on campus that featured an overview of his research and career. Carnoy is a labor economist interested in the relationship between the economy and the educational system. On hand to fete Carnoy was Alejandro Toledo, the former president of Peru and a former student of Carnoy's. Toledo spoke about the professor's positive influence on his life.
JAMES SHEEHAN, the Dickason Professor in the Humanities, has received Germany's Order Pour le mérite für Wissenschaften und Künste. The order is considered to be one of the highest honors that Germany bestows upon scientists, scholars and artists. The order's task, according to its charter, is to foster lively contact and the exchange of ideas among scholars and artists "who, by virtue of the widespread recognition of their achievements, have acquired an outstanding reputation." No more than 40 German nationals and 40 foreigners may be members at one time. President Emeritus Gerhard Casper was elected to the order in 1993.
