Nobel laureate to give lecture on olfactory system

Nobel laureate Linda Buck, PhD, whose research has provided key insights into the mechanisms that underlie the sense of smell in mammals, will deliver the medical school's annual Katherine McCormick Distinguished Lecture. Her presentation, "Deconstructing smell," will take place at noon Nov. 28 in Fairchild Auditorium.

Buck is an investigator for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, associate director of basic sciences at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and an affiliate professor of physiology and biophysics at the University of Washington.

She shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her discoveries about the organization of the olfactory system.

The McCormick Lecture series began in 1974 with a bequest from Katharine McCormick, who designated the funds "for the encouragement and assistance of women in pursuing the study of medicine, in teaching medicine and in engaging in medical research."
