Dressing in red for heartfelt cause

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, taking the lives of more than half a million every year.

"It's important women know that," said Latha Palaniappan, MD, who will be one of the featured lecturers at the Go Red for Women Community Lecture—a medical center event on Feb. 2 to honor the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women February Campaign. This is the third year for the national campaign, which the AHA launched in 2004 in an effort to educate and create awareness of women and heart disease.

Three Stanford Cardiovascular Institute members—Michael McConnell, MD; Christopher Gardner, PhD, and Palaniappan—will discuss heart imaging, nutrition and cardiovascular care at the community lecture. The panel begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Clark Center auditorium.

Also as part of the national campaign, organizers are asking people to wear red on Feb. 2 and 3 to mark "Red Dress Days." Red Dress pins will be available at the hospital the first week of February. (The heart association is requesting a small donation for each pin.)
