King Institute ceremony kicks off campus events honoring Martin Luther King Jr.
Clayborne Carson (center), a professor of history and founder of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Research and Education Institute, presented King Institute awards to recipients including former Secretary of State George Shultz (right), the Thomas W. and Susan B. Ford Distinguished Fellow at the Hoover Institution, at a gathering at Tresidder Union on Friday afternoon. The event celebrated both the legacy of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and the inauguration of the King Institute, now part of the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CCRSE). Other award recipients include Harold Boyd, a former dean and former director of the Medical Fund for the Office of Development; Wayne Duckworth, a retired staff member of Information Technology Systems and Services; artist-musician Drue Kataoka; and folk singers Guy and Candie Carawan.
The Carawans, known for popularizing the song We Shall Overcome, led attendees in a chorus of the civil rights anthem to close the ceremony. The event kicked off nearly two weeks of campus events held in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
