The agreement this week between Stanford and Google to digitize university library materials will catapult the university’s digital output “from the boutique scale to the truly industrial,” says University Librarian Michael Keller. His colleague, Andrew Herkovic, who supervises foundation relations and strategic projects, says digitizing massive amounts of information will save researchers valuable time. While under the new collaboration Google is expected to operate scanning facilities off campus, Stanford Libraries have been digitizing materials on site since 2002, using advanced robotic technology, Herkovic explains.
