Hennessy leading China delegation
President John Hennessy is heading to Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai tomorrow on a 10-day trip that underscores Stanford's increasing interest in the People's Republic of China.
Two highlights of Hennessy's trip are a visit to Peking University on May 26 and participation in an alumni conference in Shanghai on May 28. In Beijing, Peking University will celebrate "Stanford Day." Steve Suda, director of the Stanford Office of Asian Relations (SOAR), said Hennessy will deliver a speech and faculty members will give lectures on campus. Participants include Professors Doug Osheroff, physics; Amos Nur, geophysics; Lawrence Lau, economics; Hau Lee, business; and Masahiko Aoki, economics (emeritus).
Stanford Day also will mark the inauguration of the university's new Overseas Studies Program in China. The venture, which will welcome its first 30 undergraduates this September, will be based at Peking University, known locally as Beida. During its first year, the program will operate during the Autumn and Spring Quarters.
Finally, the first Stanford International Conference in Shanghai expects to attract alumni, university supporters and businesspeople from around the Pacific Rim, Suda said. During the daylong event, Hennessy will welcome participants invited to listen to talks by Lee, Osheroff and James Plummer, dean of the School of Engineering.
