SF Giants hold donor day event

The San Francisco Giants held their 7th annual Organ Donor Awareness Day May 27 at SBC Park. The event was dedicated to Lori Gardner, wife of bullpen coach and GiantsÂ’ alumnus Mark Gardner.

Lori Gardner received a liver transplant in 1998 at Stanford and, though she recently lost her battle with liver cancer, her story illustrates how donations prolong lives.

The Giants welcomed doctors and staff who supported Gardner during her illness. Joanne Imperial, MD, associate professor of medicine; hepatologist Mark Welton, MD, associate professor and chief of colorectal surgery; Carlos Esquivel, MD, professor of surgery and chief of transplantation; and Tito Monge, physicianÂ’s assistant in the transplant program, attended.

Imperial praised Mark Gardner for promoting awareness, especially through establishing the “Step to the Plate Foundation,” which helps pay lodging for families who need to spend time near Stanford.

Organ donation baseball cards were handed out at all gates urging fans to become donors.
