ABC-TV to air special on sleep
This Saturday, ABC News will air an hour-long special on that thing none of us ever seems to get enough of: sleep.
Hosted by Nancy Snyderman, the special draws on expertise from the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic.
Rafael Pelayo, MD, Clete Kushida, MD, PhD, and Nelson Powell, MD, join other leading national researchers in examining disorders that range from sleep deprivation to drowsy driving and beyond.
One East Coast family in the show will undergo a "sleep makeover," in which unhealthy sleep habits will be scrutinized and revamped.
Snyderman, who's done numerous specials for ABC, said she always looks forward to working with Stanford's doctors.
The fact is surprising, considering how Powell put Snyderman through a grueling three-day sleep-deprivation regimen, all the while testing her physical and mental acuity.
At the end of the 72 hours sleep drought, Snyderman drove around a special course at the Infineon Raceway near Napa to demonstrate the resulting impairment.
"I was astonished," said Snyderman. "I was deluded into thinking I was more in control than I really was -- just like someone whoÂ’s driving when drunk."
The show, "Sleep: How to Get the Rest of Your Life," airs Saturday at 10 p.m. on KGO-TV.
