Thorburn, Blauwet earn sports honors
Forget about the research journals for now. Rheumatology fellow Christine Thorburn, MD, and medical student Cheri Blauwet are making names for themselves in the nationÂ’s sports pages.
Thorburn earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic team after winning the womenÂ’s individual time trial at the U.S. Cycling FederationÂ’s national championships in June. Thorburn will be part of a three-member squad that will represent the United States in Athens next month. A profile of Thorburn, who is also a med school alumna (class of 1999), will appear in an upcoming issue of Medical Center Report.
Blauwet, who just completed her first year of medical school, has been nominated for an ESPY Award for Best Athlete with a Disability. Blauwet won the womenÂ’s wheelchair divisions of the Boston, New York and Los Angeles marathons during the past year.
The ESPY Awards will be televised on ESPN July 18. Winners are determined based on the number of online votes they receive; voting closes Friday. To view BlauwetÂ’s profile or to vote, go to http://espn.go.com/espy2004/s/04disablednominees.html.
