Thorburn races today in Olympics
Rheumatology fellow Christine Thorburn, MD, gets her second chance for an Olympic medal today when she competes in the women’s individual time trial in road cycling.
On Sunday, Thorburn finished 15th in the women’s road race. Her U.S. teammates Kristin Armstrong and Dede Barry were eighth and 16th, respectively.
Thorburn spent most of the 73.7-mile ride leading the American team. She avoided a crash that sent the Dutch defending gold medallist Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel to the hospital, but got caught amongst slower riders with two laps to go. She came in 1:18 behind the winner, Australian Sara Carrigan.
Both Thorburn and Barry will compete in today’s time trial. Before heading to Greece, Thorburn said she thought the U.S. women had potential to medal in this event.
