Pizzo elected to IOM governing council
Philip Pizzo, MD, dean of the School of Medicine, has been elected to the governing council of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. The IOM, based in Washington, D.C., is an independent body that advises the federal government on issues related to biomedical science, medicine and health.
Pizzo, whose appointment became effective Jan. 1, will serve a three-year term on the council, which provides oversight for all of the institute's activities. He was notified of the appointment in December in a letter from IOM president Harvey Fineberg, MD, PhD.
The dean also has been elected to serve on two other national bodies that aim to improve health by enhancing academic medicine. He will serve on the executive committee for the Association of American Medical Colleges and on the board of directors for the Association of Academic Health Centers.
