Summer scenes from the main campus

It’s been months since most faculty and staff have been on the main campus, thanks to the pandemic. This slideshow suggests some of the changes that have occurred.

Masked grad students — Masks are the order of the day for those who are on campus, including physics graduate students Carlos Kometter and Jesse Hoke.

Main Quad — In the wake of the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, the Oval has become a place of reflection. The names and photographs of people victimized by anti-Black racism were placed in careful rows, creating a powerful reminder of work to be done.

FELT LAKE — Alan Launer, associate director of conservation planning, discovered that the shelter-in-place order in effect across the Bay Area created cleaner air and better views. Launer was at Felt Reservoir checking the bald eagles and the status of vegetation management activities when he noticed that he could see the San Francisco skyline, with the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in the foreground.

EVGR — The new Escondido Village Graduate Residences have transformed the east side of campus. The EVGR complex has four 10-story residential buildings, with wings ranging from six to 10 stories. It is designed to provide more than 2,400 new beds for single graduate students and couples without children, as well as three apartments for assistant deans in the Graduate Life Office. This fall, a portion of the complex will be used to house some undergraduates in accordance with social distancing protocols.

Across the street from the Escondido Village Graduate Residences, construction continues on the three-level underground Manzanita Field Garage, which will be topped with a recreational field. It will provide about 850 spaces in support of Escondido Village Graduate Residences. Construction is expected to be completed by December 2020.

The Galvez parking lot across from the alumni center was converted into a drive-through COVID-19 testing site for Stanford Health Care. As one of the earliest providers of COVID-19 testing to the greater Bay Area, Stanford Health Care continues to be a leading resource in the pandemic.

Gay Liberation — At least briefly one evening, the figures depicted in George Segal’s Gay Liberation sculpture on Lomita Mall near the Main Quad sported masks used to stem the spread of COVID-19.

Academic medical building — On Quarry Road, the Center for Academic Medicine will provide office and administrative space for Stanford Medicine departments currently located throughout the medical campus. The new center will primarily house clinical faculty, computational researchers and departmental administration and leadership.

Public safety building — Construction continues on the new Public Safety Building, which is a component of the Bonair Siding redevelopment area. The new building will consolidate all public safety functions under one roof and is expected to be completed in November 2020.
