Power restored after partial outage at Stanford’s main campus

A power system fault resulted in a partial power outage at Stanford’s main campus on Tuesday. The problem was traced to a fault in a power line feeding Green Library East and the adjacent Coupa Cafe.

Power was restored to nearly all the affected buildings by early afternoon, and university staff identified and isolated the main power system fault to a line feeding Green Library East and the adjacent Coupa Cafe.

An investigation of what caused the failure of the electrical distribution cable is underway.

The outage was unrelated to the PG&E outage earlier this summer that left the campus without power for four days.

Shortly before 7 a.m., the university community was alerted to the latest power outage, which affected many buildings in the athletics area, as well as the Green and Lathrop libraries, the Hoover Institution, the Arrillaga Alumni Center, the Littlefield Center, and the Bonair Siding facilities.

Classes, conferences, and camps held in the affected buildings were minimally affected with some temporary adjustments made to locations or schedules.

By 2 p.m., power was restored to all buildings with the exception of Green Library East and the adjacent Coupa Cafe as technicians worked on the affected line.

Green Library West (Bing Wing) remained powered and open to patrons throughout the day, and no student residents were affected by the outage.

An estimated time of power restoration to the remaining buildings was unknown as of early Tuesday evening.
