Stanford Techie Festival starts Monday, Aug. 17

Instructors are eager to share tips, tricks and best practices – and to answer questions – at the Seventh Annual Techie Festival, Aug. 17-28. With 19 classes to choose from, it's a great way for learners to get the training they need and use STAP funds before the end of the fiscal year.

Stanford faculty, staff and students are invited to sign up for classes at this month’s Seventh Annual Techie Festival.

The Seventh Annual Techie Festival, which opens Monday, features several new classes, including One Note: Lose the Clutter and Organize Your Stuff, The Best Excel Techniques You’ve Never Heard Of and Mail Chimp: Build Your Next Email Campaign.

The two-week festival, organized by University IT Technology Training, features morning and afternoon classes in Turing Auditorium, located in Polya Hall.

This year’s festival includes 19 classes on a variety of software programs, including Google Analytics, Adobe Photoshop and Drupal. It also includes four classes on Microsoft Excel, including one focused on pivot tables and another on formatting professional-looking spreadsheets.

Don Cameron, the course and marketing coordinator at University IT Technology Training, said the festival is designed for people who may not have the time or funds for a hands-on class, but still need training.

“We plan these lectures to ensure there is something for everyone, whether they’re novices or advanced learners,” Cameron said. “Our presenters want to ensure students get the training they need, and no question during the lecture goes unanswered.”

All attendees are welcome to bring their laptops to follow along, although they are not required.

Registration is $150 for each class. The three-hour classes – 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. – are open to faculty, staff and students. For regular university employees working 50 percent time or more, it’s a great way to use remaining Staff Training Assistance Program (STAP) funds before Aug. 31, the end of the fiscal year.

In addition, the Festival includes a free Tech Briefing from 3-4:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, on Blue Jeans Video Conferencing. (Tech Briefings are free, informal and interactive seminars led by knowledgeable IT professionals. They are held monthly. No registration is required.)

The full line-up of lectures along with registration information is available online at techiefestival.stanford.edu.
