Stanford provost announces Bass University Fellows in Undergraduate Education

The program recognizes faculty for extraordinary contributions to undergraduate education.

Provost Persis Drell announced Thursday that eight faculty members have been appointed or reappointed Bass University Fellows.

The Bass University Fellows in Undergraduate Education Program recognizes faculty, including faculty from the graduate and professional schools, for their exceptional contributions to undergraduate education.

Each Bass Fellow is recognized in a number of ways, including being invited to join the Bass Council of Fellows, which meets twice a year and advises the vice provost for undergraduate education on a variety of issues and initiatives.

Each of the Bass Fellow appointments is named in honor of donors who made significant gifts to the Stanford Endowment for Undergraduate Education during the Campaign for Undergraduate Education, which was completed in 2005.

Established in 2001, the program was named in honor of Anne T., MLA ’07, and Robert M. Bass, MBA ’74, who provided matching funds to launch it. Once a faculty member rotates out of an individual fellow appointment, he or she becomes a Bass University Fellow in Undergraduate Education in perpetuity.

Reflecting the university’s emphasis on effective teaching, the Bass University Fellows honor is one of several annual teaching awards that are given university-wide and at the school level and by student groups. A full list of awards can be found here.
