Every fall, residential student leaders spend a few weeks before the academic year starts learning leadership skills and preparing for their roles as resident assistants and ethnic theme associates in the many dorms and residences at Stanford.

Throughout the academic year, Stanford’s Residential Education manages a student leader selection process to ensure that both students and the community benefit from a successful and cohesive residential student leader team.
A few weeks before the quarter starts, student leaders return to campus for training where they practice and master the essential skills needed to serve as leaders in their residential communities.
During the first week of training, resident assistants and ethnic theme associates attend neighborhood-based group sessions with campus partners.
Role-specific training is also provided, giving students the opportunity to learn and apply content specific to their roles and houses.
Student leaders play a key role in enriching the diverse and vibrant residential communities at Stanford.
Stanford offers a range of opportunities for students to get involved and make an impact within their community beyond resident assistants. Some students choose to participate in neighborhood councils while others participate in the pre-assignment process.
Living and learning together helps students develop the ability to understand and navigate differences and prepares them for the complexities of life beyond graduation.
