Campus officials worked Monday afternoon to restore power to approximately 35 buildings affected by a power outage. A small electrical fire on the roof of Maples Pavilion was thought to be related to the outage.

Palo Alto and Mountain View fire units responded quickly to extinguish the fire. Maples was evacuated, and roads were closed at Campus Drive between Bonair Siding and Sam McDonald Mall. Pedestrians were asked to avoid all areas surrounding Maples. No injuries and no major damage were reported.

The outage was triggered at approximately 1:45 p.m. Monday by deconstruction work at the site of the former Cardinal Cogeneration Plant. A short circuit caused the outage and prompted an emergency generator that provided power to Maples to automatically turn on. An emergency light in the southeast corner of the roof of the sports arena was reported to have ignited some roofing materials, according to Bob Wheeler, zone manager in Buildings and Grounds Maintenance. The fire was reported shortly after 2 p.m.

The facilities affected by the power outage included buildings at the Knight Management Center, and in the Arts District. Green Library and the Hoover Institution buildings and several athletics facilities also experienced outages.

There are no athletic events scheduled for Maples this week, Athletics officials said.

Updates were posted on the university’s Emergency Information website throughout the afternoon at emergency.stanford.edu.

By 6 p.m. power had been restored to most buildings.
