On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect and two months after the end of the U.S. Civil War, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free. Juneteenth has been commemorated in communities across America ever since, and it became a federal holiday in 2021.
This year, campus events around the theme “Building Together” showcase African American food, art, culture, and more, and include an exhibit on the history of African American quilting, a cooking demonstration, and a community lunch open to all Stanford community members. For more information and a full list of events, visit the Juneteenth website.
