Q&A with Jason Hill

Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?

I would have to say two people influenced me professionally. First, my father, who was a corporate attorney for many years and was always meticulous in his preparation. Second was the U.S. Senator that I worked for early in my career, Carl Levin, who taught me that no matter how smart you think you are, if you don’t know the answer to a question, the correct response is “I don’t know but I will find out.”

What’s one thing you’re learning now, and why is it important?

I am trying to become a better listener – something I think we all can strive toward. It really is a learned skill to be able to be present and hear what others have to say before formulating your own opinion.

What’s one thing that surprised you the most about working at Stanford?

I knew that in accepting this position I would be working alongside some of the smartest and talented people in their respective fields. I have been surprised that, in addition, people here at Stanford are equally humble and down to earth, which lets me know that I made the right decision to come and work here.
