New information on COVID-19 isolation process

Dean of Students Mona Hicks and Vaden Health Services Executive Director Dr. Jim Jacobs note students who test positive and live in campus housing with a private bedroom and a single-occupancy bathroom will isolate in their assigned housing unit.

Dear students and postdocs,

With winter break coming to a close and many of you returning to Stanford today, we are writing to let you know that we are updating our isolation protocol for students who live on campus and test positive for COVID-19 while here. This applies to students who test positive after a rapid test, Color test or other PCR test. Here’s a winter quarter testing checklist.

Graduate and professional students, postdocs and some undergraduates in EVGR-A, Mirrielees and the Suites

Effective 10 a.m. January 1 and until further notice, students who test positive and live in campus housing with a private bedroom and a single-occupancy bathroom will isolate in their assigned housing unit. This is particularly relevant to graduate and professional students, postdocs and some undergraduate students in EVGR-A, Mirrielees and the Suites.

The university will continue to provide medical care, meal delivery and other support as needed. Students who live on campus in this type of housing, test positive, and can isolate in place should complete this form and refer to this web resource.

We have a limited number of temporary spaces for students who wish to relocate while their apartment-mate is in isolation. More information is available here, including how to stay safe when sharing an apartment with a student who tests positive.

Undergraduate students in dorms and row houses

Undergraduate students who test positive and live in dorms and row houses that have shared bedrooms and bathrooms should view this web resource about how to prepare for isolation housing and then report to the Quarantine/Isolation Housing Service Center in Escondido Village, where they will be assigned to temporary alternative housing.

Why we made the change

We updated our quarantine protocol to prepare for an expected increase in the number of positive cases among students and postdocs, reflecting national and international trends for the Omicron variant. The new protocol streamlines our process while continuing to effectively isolate those with a private bedroom and single-occupancy bathroom.

We would once again like to thank you for adopting the university’s multi-layered approach to reducing the transmission of COVID-19, including vaccination, boosters, physical distancing, face coverings and surveillance testing. Let’s continue working together to keep our university community as healthy and safe as possible.

Sincerely,

Mona Hicks
