Veterans Day letter from Stanford President Richard Saller

November 10, 2023

Dear Stanford community and campus visitors,

Today, we honor our nation’s veterans, those who have served in our military and sacrificed to secure our peace.

Their numbers include many from our Stanford community. Today, our community includes military veterans; active-duty service members; members of the National Guard and Reservists; children, spouses, and parents of veterans and service members; and ROTC cadets. We also honor the many Stanford alumni who have answered the call to serve.

This tradition of military service dates to the Spanish-American War, shortly after the university’s founding. Since that time, members of the Stanford community have served in every major conflict in our nation’s history.

Memorial Court and Memorial Auditorium are dedicated to Stanford veterans. Each year on Veterans Day, we place wreaths in these spaces to honor their service and sacrifice. In the lobby of Memorial Auditorium, plaques commemorate the 406 service members affiliated with Stanford who have died in service to our country.

To all of our veterans, thank you for your service and your patriotism.

With gratitude,

Richard P. Saller
President
