As part of the university’s ongoing effort to manage increasing numbers of tourists and to preserve parking spaces for permit holders, all visitor parking on the Stanford Oval will be moved to Roth Way effective Monday, Sept. 21, and be replaced with “A” permit parking spaces.

After the change, the Oval will have parking spaces for vehicles with “A” permits, disabled person placards and service vehicle permits, as well as Zipcar car-sharing vehicles.

The university is also considering other measures to help maintain parking for those who pay for permits, including extending parking enforcement hours to 6 p.m. in the Oval.

“We are working to manage the growing tourist presence on campus and its impacts on the campus community, particularly people who work, study and do research on or near the Quad,” said Brian Shaw, director of Parking & Transportation Services (P&TS).

The summer months saw further increases in tourist visitation to the campus. Many tourists would seek alternate parking when Oval visitor parking would become full, creating traffic congestion on the Oval and challenges for parking enforcement.

In August, tour buses were relocated from Roth Way to a new bus parking area on Lasuen Street near Campus Drive. The former Roth Way bus parking is being converted to numbered visitor parking spaces as well as “A” permit spaces.

Effective Sept. 21, the new visitor parking on Roth Way will be $2.50 per hour. In addition, visitor parking in the Roth Way Garage, on Lomita Drive and along Roth Way will increase to $2.50 per hour.

Visitor parking prices at all other university locations will change to $2 per hour starting Oct. 1. If units have visitors who need to park on campus, P&TS encourages visitors to use the Parkmobile app or mobile website.

Instead of standing in line at pay machines, visitors can pay with their mobile devices using a credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express) at metered, pay-and-display and pay-by-space parking locations. Learn how it works at the Parkmobile site.

P&TS encourages visitors to register in advance with Parkmobile before arriving on campus. Most visitor spaces are equipped to accept Parkmobile payments, so look for the green Parkmobile sticker posted on the parking meter or pay machine.

Please refer to the Parking and Circulation Map for additional visitor parking locations.
