Approaching the 2023-24 year

Dear Stanford community,

Welcome to the 2023-24 academic year. In the coming year it will be my honor to serve as president while the search for a new president takes place. On October 1 the transition will continue as Dean Jenny Martinez assumes the role of provost.

I want to thank President Tessier-Lavigne and Provost Drell for the countless hours they have devoted to seeing Stanford through the pandemic and developing a long-range vision. I am also grateful to Jenny for shouldering the responsibility of provost overseeing the academic programs of a great university.

Our aim is to provide continuity in the coming year with complete confidence in the extraordinary excellence of our faculty, students, and staff pursuing and supporting our fundamental mission of research, education, and patient care with integrity. Jenny and I are energized by our new (and unexpected) responsibilities and look forward to meeting with as many of you as possible in the coming quarter in order to learn how to support your work.
