Post-verdict student gathering

The Office for Inclusion, Community and Integrative Learning shares details on an informal student gathering marking the conclusion of the Derek Chauvin trial for the murder of George Floyd.

Dear students,

The Office for Inclusion, Community and Integrative Learning, in collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs and the Office for Religious and Spiritual Life, will host an informal gathering for Stanford students from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight on White Plaza.

As noted by President Tessier-Lavigne, students living on campus are invited to come together and stand in witness to the moment as we mark the conclusion of the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd last year.

Welcome remarks will be provided by Jan Barker-Alexander, Assistant Vice Provost for Inclusion & Community and Executive Director of the Centers for Equity, Community, and Leadership.

Dr. Amina Darwish, Associate Dean for Religious & Spiritual Life and Advisor for Muslim Life, will recite a verse from the Quran and then Rev. Dr. Sakena Young-Scaggs, Senior Associate Dean for Religious & Spiritual Life and Minister of Memorial Church, will lead the community in an act of witnessing this moment. Students will be invited to tie ribbons around trees on the plaza as signs and symbols of solidarity.

All COVID safety measures remain in place. Please wear a face covering and physically distance yourself from people outside your household. Remember staff and faculty members share your concerns. We will be at the event to be in community with you and will continue to support you. You will find more information on campus resources here.

Sincerely,

Emelyn dela Peña
