ERIC SHAQFEH, the Lester Levi Carter Professor and chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering, was awarded the Alpha Chi Sigma Award for Chemical Engineering Research. The annual award was established by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and honors accomplishments in fundamental or applied chemical engineering research.

Shaqfeh currently leads the Shaqfeh Group, a chemical and mechanical engineering research lab specializing in the flow of complex fluids ranging from biofluids, such as blood or cilia, to those dominating the energy industry like drilling muds and fracking fluids. Shaqfeh’s work is relevant to various fields of study, including research related to oil extraction, 3D printing and cancer therapy.

Shaqfeh will be recognized for his accomplishments at the annual meeting honors ceremony this October in Pittsburgh.
