Ryan Burns is selected to start at quarterback for the Cardinal

Senior Ryan Burns will start at quarterback for the Cardinal during the first football game of the season on Sept. 2.

Football coach DAVID SHAW recently opened a question-and-answer session with fans at the annual football fanfest by saying that attendees could ask him any question except one: Who will start at quarterback for the Cardinal?

Since that time, Shaw has selected senior science, technology and society major RYAN BURNS to start for the Cardinal against Kansas State on Friday, Sept. 2. Junior KELLER CHRYST, who is from Palo Alto, also will play during the game. But the role of starter is a special one.

Said Shaw in his Aug. 24 announcement, “There hasn’t been a huge separation between the two. Both guys have played extremely well. Ryan has been enough ahead to get the nod.”

It says something about the importance of the quarterback position that everyone was clamoring to know who the starter would be, even on a team with last year’s Heisman runner up, CHRISTIAN McCAFFREY. Stanford, after all, has produced some accomplished quarterbacks in the past, including JOHN ELWAY, JIM PLUNKETT, ANDREW LUCK and KEVIN HOGAN.

Stanford Athletics recently posted a story featuring quarterbacks coach TAVITA PRITCHARD, a notable veteran of the position himself, discussing the Cardinal quarterbacks here.
