Response to new Title IX regulations

April 19, 2024

Dear Stanford community,

Today, the U.S. Department of Education issued new Title IX regulations. Title IX is a federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. These new regulations, which go into effect on Aug. 1, 2024, provide updated guidance for how Stanford will continue its efforts to promote an environment that is free from sexual assault, sexual harassment, sex discrimination, and sexual violence. We are just now beginning to review these new regulations, comparing them to what was originally proposed, and determining what is needed in order to comply.

In June 2022, the Department of Education proposed the new Title IX regulations. The proposed rules are intended to replace those issued by the previous presidential administration, which took effect in August 2020. The university reviewed the proposed revisions and participated in the U.S. Department of Education’s public comment process.

As we analyze how the new regulations will affect our current policies and programs, we want you to know that we will continue our efforts to ensure that our campus is a safe and respectful environment. Our goal throughout this process will remain to provide support for our community and ensure a fair, timely, and effective Title IX consistent with federal law.

In the next few months before the regulations take effect, we will be consulting with faculty, student leadership, and others for input and guidance on the implementation of the new regulations on our policies, programs, and procedures. Also, we established a web form to solicit input on these regulations when they were proposed in 2022, and we encourage you to continue to share your thoughts.

We will keep the university community informed on any changes to our current policies and procedures.

Sincerely,

Patrick Dunkley
Vice Provost for Institutional Equity, Access, and Community
