Stanford to issue periodic private property notices on Saturday, Feb. 19

People entering onto campus Saturday morning will be stopped momentarily and handed an informational flier that states that they are entering the private property of the university. The notification occurs about once every five years.

About 25 to 30 Grounds Services crewmembers will be stationed at entry points around the university to pass out the fliers to all motorists and pedestrians. The flier designates the university Board of Trustees as the landowner.

The flier also states that the right to pass is by permission and subject to the control of the owner, under Section 1008 of the Civil Code. Section 21113 of the California Vehicle Code gives the university's governing board the authority to enforce all vehicular traffic and parking regulations on the property.

"The public notice process we will be following on Saturday, Feb. 19, is simply another means of protecting the private character of land such as that of Stanford," said Patrick Dunkley, senior university counsel. "Stanford has traditionally chosen to rely on both the protection provided by the specific California statutes and the protection provided by the notification process."

Grounds Services will carry out the distribution from about 6 to 10 a.m. Motorists will be allowed onto campus after receiving the flier. The university's planning office and general counsel have reviewed the notification.
