Stanford offers admission to 2,412 for the Class of 2009

The Office of Undergraduate Admission announced today that 2,412 students for the Class of 2009 have been admitted. Letters are being mailed to 1,545 students admitted through the Regular Review process; follow-up letters have been sent to another 867 students previously offered admission through the Single-Choice Early Action program. All admitted students have until May 2 to decide whether to accept the offers.

The total number of applications increased significantly this year, rising above 20,000 for the first time in university history. The admit rate was the lowest ever, with just under 12% of the 20,194 applicants admitted.

"As applicants, these students have set impressive records across the board," said Director of Admission Anna Marie Porras. "They will have an even greater impact on campus as students. Once at Stanford, they will pave new paths with their commitment to intellectual exploration, their remarkable diversity of talents, and their dynamic perspectives shaped by unique experiences."

Even with the increased number of applications, the academic quality of the pool remained exceptionally strong. Over 90 percent of the admitted applicants for whom class rankings were reported ranked within the top 10 percent of their high school class, and 80 percent have a grade point average of 4.0 or higher.

All admitted students have been invited to visit the Stanford campus during Admit Weekend, April 28-30, to explore the university's unrivaled resources and to meet their future classmates.
