Atlanta: Student Resources & Support

Dear students and postdoctoral scholars,

It is with great sorrow that we write to you today, after the loss of eight innocent lives in Atlanta, among them six Asian American women. We want to echo President Tessier-Lavigne’s statement in support of Stanford’s Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander community, in the context of a broader, deeply disturbing trend of anti-Asian racism and violence that we’ve seen around the country, including here in the Bay Area. We condemn these acts of violence.

We also want to offer support to those of you who are seeking resources and community in the aftermath of this stunningly horrific crime, which we are learning about while studying and working mostly in solitude. We know that many of you are reaching out to one another, to loved ones and family members, and to faculty and staff that you know to process these events together. It is heartening to once again be reminded that we are a community, even while we are apart.

We would like to remind you of additional support available to students. The Asian American Activities Center (A3C) has created and shared this message, which places this week’s news in context and offers an extensive list of resources. We would also like to draw your attention to this website on harassment and hate towards Asians, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders during COVID-19. The Dean of Students Office is reaching out to students in the Atlanta area to offer support. Our Residence Deans (for undergraduates) and the Graduate Life Office (for graduate and professional students) welcome your calls. The Faculty Staff Help Center is also available to talk with postdoctoral scholars. Know that we are here for you.
