Wrestler Shane Griffith wins 165-pound title at NCAA finals
Wrestler SHANE GRIFFITH is a national champion, having won the NCAA final at 165 pounds.
Griffith is the second wrestler in program history to win an individual national title, joining Stanford Hall of Famer MATT GENTRY (2004). He was also named Most Outstanding Wrestler for the Tournament – the first Cardinal to receive the honor.
The Westwood, N.J., native registered a 6-2 decision over No. 3 seed Jake Wentzel of Pittsburgh. He now boasts a career record of 40-1.
The Cardinal recorded 35.5 team points, good for 17th overall. It is the program’s seventh top-20 finish and the fourth-best mark in school history.
The end of the season is bittersweet. In July 2020, Stanford announced that wrestling would be among 11 varsity sports discontinued at the conclusion of the 2020-21 season.
