Russell Furr appointed associate vice provost and director of Environmental Health and Safety
RUSSELL FURR has been appointed associate vice provost and director of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) by ANN ARVIN, vice provost and dean of research. Furr’s appointment is effective July 1.
Since 2015, Furr has served as deputy director of EH&S and director of research safety at Stanford. He has more than 20 years’ experience in health and safety leadership experience in higher education.
In his role as the associate vice provost, Furr serves as the senior official for the management of environmental and safety programs for the university community, including the offices of Research Safety, Emergency Management, the Fire Marshal, the Environmental Protection Program and the Occupational Health Center.
Furr’s career began at Stanford. He has worked in EH&S leadership positions, including as manager of Hazardous Material and Safety & Compliance Assistance Programs. He earned his master’s degree in public health from the University of California, Berkeley, and a dual BS/BA degree in biochemistry and chemistry from North Carolina State University.
Before returning to Stanford as deputy director of EH&S, Furr was the director of environmental safety, sustainability and risk at the University of Maryland, College Park, with responsibilities for the offices of Research Safety, Risk Management, Emergency Management and Sustainability. There, Furr reorganized the department to create an Office of Research Safety to better support the research community.
Furr succeeds Larry Gibbs, who announced his retirement in February after 26 years at Stanford.
