Stanford trades its Twitter handle to Syracuse

Stanford will be using oranges traded from Syracuse to replenish its Orange Bowl trophy.

Stanford’s social media lineup saw a shakeup over the weekend as the athletic department traded its Twitter handle, @SUAthletics, to Syracuse University Athletics. According to the tongue-in-cheek announcement, this is believed to be the first blockbuster trade in college athletics. To complete the trade, Syracuse will send a collection of local goods to be named later, including a case of oranges. Stanford will use the oranges to refill its 2011 Orange Bowl trophy. (Syracuse teams sport the color orange on their uniforms.)

The roster move follows the emergence of a new Stanford handle, @GoStanford.

“Obviously we’re thrilled to activate @GoStanford as our official Twitter handle and pull off this dynamic trade,” said Bernard Muir, the Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics. “From a branding standpoint, this trade makes sense for both schools. We held both accounts – the social media equivalent to having two starting quarterbacks – and we wanted to derive as much value fun as possible. We expect great things from our new starter, @GoStanford, and wish @SUAthletics good luck in a new home.”

Despite rumors to the contrary, Athletics assured the media that “it is mere coincidence that Syracuse sent assistant men’s basketball coach Tim O’Toole to Stanford earlier last week.”

The announcement was big news in the sports world, prompting coverage in such outlets as the Wall Street Journal and FOXSports.com. Even Business Insider Australia carried an item, saying the announcement was “one of the stranger college sports reports you will ever hear.”
