Five Stanford scholars awarded Guggenheim Fellowship

Ran Abramitzky, Joel Cabrita, Angela Garcia, Robb Willer, and Sheng Xu have received 2026 Guggenheim Fellowships.

Five Stanford University scholars are among the 224 researchers, artists, and innovators named to the 2026 class of Guggenheim Fellows. This prestigious honor recognizes mid-career scholars, artists, and scientists who have demonstrated outstanding work and continue to show exceptional promise in their field.

Fellows receive funding for projects that address pressing issues of our time. Some of this year’s awardees will help advance life-saving medical technologies, shape the future of artificial intelligence, and explore the origins of contemporary crises, among other endeavors.

The Stanford-affiliated recipients are:

  • Ran Abramitzky, Stanford Federal Credit Union Professor of Economics and senior associate dean for the social sciences in the School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S)
  • Joel Cabrita, professor of history and director of the Center for African Studies in H&S
  • Angela Garcia, professor of anthropology in H&S
  • Robb Willer, professor of sociology in H&S
  • Sheng Xu, professor of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine in the School of Medicine
