Resources and support for those impacted by unrest in Iran

In a message to students and postdoctoral scholars, support and campus resources are offered.

Dear students and postdoctoral scholars,

Like many of you, we are closely following the brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters in Iran including women and university students. The unrest, which began after Mahsa Amini, 22, died while in police custody, continues today. As scholars who are committed to caring for young people, this hits close to home for us, and we know it is directly and personally impacting many of you.

For the past 10 days, we have been reaching out to students we know to be of Iranian descent to offer our support and campus resources. Because these events impact our broader community, we are writing now to share these resources with all of you. We affirm our commitment to upholding fundamental human rights and condemn police brutality. We admire the bravery of Iranians who are speaking out for freedom and dignity, and especially want to acknowledge the women who are leading these protests.

As we all struggle to process the deeply disturbing news from Iran, here’s a reminder that Stanford has a number of helpful resources for students and postdocs. If you need a hand, please reach out to any of these offices.

The Hamid and Christina Moghadam Program in Iranian Studies and the Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies offer opportunities to learn about relevant research and teaching. Here is our comprehensive list of all student mental health and well-being resources. This is a difficult time in our country and world for many reasons. Let us continue moving through our days together with kindness, grace, and understanding for all that we are carrying.

Sincerely,
