New study sessions, tools and learning support

What's new at the Stanford Learning Lab this month? A cool study tool, new student groups and study sessions, help revising your academic writing, and more.

Happy Spring Quarter! 

While we all might be tempted to enjoy the gorgeous weather that we have been experiencing, our team here at the Learning Lab is excited to share our renewed interest in a learning tool known as IDoRecall.  Last week our Learning Specialists sat down with founder David Handel, who demonstrated this tool’s ability to store academic content in an organized repository, all designed to help students of any subject study content using spaced repetition practice sessions.  Please reach out to schedule a Drop-In Session with any of our Learning Specialists who can individualize a session using this tool.  

The Learning Lab team has been creative with developing new Student Groups this quarter. We will continue to offer our popular Power Hour. Join a group of supportive peers who are working productively and focus on accomplishing your own academic goal. Brief shares about goals before and after the session encourage accountability and metacognition about the work process. Students will wrap up by identifying concrete next steps to further advance their projects. 

If you are a doctorate student needing support at any point in your process, please take a look at Revise and Resubmit.  This group will be facilitated by Dr. Mitch Dandignac,  for those wanting to plan and finish their dissertation, thesis, or scholarly publication. We know that every scholar at some point is told to “revise and resubmit,” but writing does not need to be a solo endeavor. On a bi-weekly basis, we will meet to share writing strategies, provide feedback and support, and write together.  

Our Learning Specialist Carolyn Wilsey will facilitate two more fantastic groups, ADHD Connections  and  Fail Better: A Strategy Practice Group. ADHD Connections is a confidential affinity group for students who identify with ADHD (no diagnosis required). Students discuss observations, questions, strategies, thoughts, and feelings related to ADHD. Fail Better provides a space for students to practice self-compassion by applying research-based strategies. We’ll explore and answer such questions as: How do I maintain academic confidence when I feel totally lost in class or get an F? How do I retain a sense of my identity as an accomplished person when I feel suddenly inundated with setbacks? Our intentions are to form community around “imperfections,” decrease feelings of isolation, and increase the health and resilience of self-concepts.

Lastly, we will be opening up our conference room every Friday between 10:00-2:00 for up to 7 students to work quietly and productively under the monitoring of our Learning Specialists (First come, first served!).  We hope that these sessions will allow students to discover a new working space while simultaneously getting to know our Learning Specialists a bit better.  Yummy snacks and helpful and targeted goal-setting included!
