Political science professor awarded Brazil's Order of Rio Branco

The Brazilian government recently bestowed the honor of the Order of Rio Branco, in the rank of Officer, on Terry L. Karl, associate professor of political science and director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Stanford. Karl was awarded the medal on June 26 during the visit of Brazilian Foreign Minister Luiz Felipe Lampreia to San Francisco.

The Order of Rio Branco was created in 1963 to recognize and celebrate the merits of Brazilian and foreign individuals who have significantly contributed to the promotion of Brazil's relations with the world.

Karl has published widely on comparative politics with special emphasis on democratization in Latin America, U.S. policy toward Central America and the politics of oil-exporting countries.
