Schawlow to receive American Innovator Award

STANFORD -- Arthur L. Schawlow, professor emeritus of physics and co-inventor of the laser, has been selected to receive the Ronald H. Brown American Innovator Award.

The award, given by the U.S. Department of Commerce, was established last year to honor the outstanding contributions made to society by U.S. inventors. It is named for the secretary of commerce who was died in an airplane crash in April during a trade mission to Bosnia. The award will be presented in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 15 in the Lincoln Gallery of the National Museum of American Art.

Nobel laureate Schawlow was honored for his contributions to the development of the laser, which has become an invaluable tool in communications, industry, medicine, military operations and scientific research.
