Stanford Magazine receives two national awards

STANFORD -- Stanford's alumni magazine has been named the 1996 Robert Sibley Magazine of the Year. In addition, its art director, Paul Carstensen, has been named Designer of the Year by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

The awards will be presented Saturday, July 6, and Monday evening, July 8, at the CASE Annual Assembly in San Francisco.

The magazine of the year award, which is sponsored by Newsweek and includes a $2,000 prize, is given annually to a general interest university magazine. This year more than 100 university magazines entered the competition. Of those, four publications were selected to receive Gold Medals and, from those, Stanford Magazine was chosen to receive the Grand Gold Medal. According to the judges, it stood out "for its rich, interesting writing . . .." The selection was made on the basis of two issues: one edited by former editor Bruce Anderson and one by senior editor Raymond Hardie. The magazine last won the Sibley in 1991.

"Achieving the right balance is the biggest challenge in editing this kind of magazine. All the basic elements the descriptions of research, education, and people must fit together intelligently. When it works out well, as it did in these two issues, it's tremendously satisfying because it approaches the best general interest publications," Hardie said.

The Designer of the Year award recognizes outstanding achievement by a graphic designer creating work for a university of college. Carstensen was recognized for his design and art direction of Stanford Magazine and of a book on Stanford's Memorial Church titled Glory of Angels.

For more than 20 years, the role of the CASE awards program has been to identify and reward the innovative work that advanced professionals do in support of their educational institutions.
