Flu shots available through Dec. 5 at Cowell

STANFORD -- Free influenza immunizations are offered again this year for faculty, staff and retirees at Cowell Student Health Service, located at 606 Campus Drive. The flu shots are available starting Oct. 3 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each Tuesday through Dec. 5.

Flu shots also will be available at the Benefits Fairs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, at Tresidder Union and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, at Fairchild Auditorium.

The shots are free for university employees, including faculty, staff, emeritus faculty and retired staff, but not Stanford Health Services employees. Employees should bring their new ID as proof of eligibility.

Students, domestic partners and spouses will be charged $18 per immunization.

The U.S. Public Health Service Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends annual flu shots for certain high-risk individuals. That group includes people over 60, and those who have such conditions as heart, lung or kidney disease, diabetes, anemia or conditions that compromise the immune system.

Pregnant women require medical clearance to receive the shots. The vaccine cannot be given to people with severe colds or other infections, or to people who are allergic to eggs.

For more information, call Cowell Student Health Service at 725-1380.
