Search for new dean of the School of Engineering begins

STANFORD -- The process to select a new dean of the School of Engineering to succeed James Gibbons is under way.

Gibbons has been named special counsel to the president and provost for industry relations.

A 12-member search committee, chaired by Joseph W. Goodman, electrical engineering, is accepting nominations and applications for the deanship, effective beginning with the 1995-96 academic year.

Other members of the search committee are David Freyberg, civil engineering; Gregory Kovacs, electrical engineering; Reginald Mitchell, mechanical engineering; Elisabeth Pate-Cornell, industrial engineering; Richard Reis, executive director of the Center for Integrated Systems; Jeffrey Ullman, computer science; John Young, medicine; Richard Zare, chemistry; graduate students Quintus Jett, industrial engineering, and Jacqueline Nerney, mechanical engineering; and Assistant Provost Ann Fletcher, who will staff the committee.

The search committee seeks input from the school's faculty in order to make a well-informed selection. Committee members hope faculty will submit recommendations for members of the Stanford faculty and external candidates, and ask that special thought be given to potential candidates who are women or members of ethnic minority groups.

The committee also wants to know what faculty members think are the most important qualifications for a new dean and what issues faculty foresee as being critical to the school in the next four years.

Comments and nominations must be received by May 31. They can be sent to the Search Committee for the Dean of the School of Engineering, Provost's Office, mail code 2061.
