Interim policy for ADA compliance approved

STANFORD -- Rosa Gonzalez, who began work as associate director of the Office for Multicultural Development on March 20, will serve as the university's primary compliance officer for the Americans with Disabilities Act, Sally Dickson, director of the office, announced.

Gonzalez replaces Clare Phillips, who resigned last year. Gonzalez formerly was a litigation associate with Nichols & Andrews in Laguna Hills, Calif. She is a graduate of Santa Clara University and the Hastings College of the Law at the University of California.

Dickson said the University Interim Policy for Section 504/ADA Grievance Procedure was approved last December by Provost Condoleezza Rice. Copies have been forwarded to a number of university administrators.

Those who received the policy are Nancy Deason, director of the Disability Resource Center; Mary Edmonds, vice provost for student affairs; Michael Jackson, dean of students; Robert Weisberg, professor of law and vice provost for faculty recruitment and development; Barbara Butterfield, vice president for faculty and staff services; Tina Kass, associate vice president for personnel; Keith Smith, director of employee relations; and all the staff affairs officers in departments and schools. The policy has been submitted to the federal Office of Civil Rights for approval. If approved, the interim policy will become Stanford's permanent policy on handling grievances under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The policy includes procedures to provide for informal and formal means of resolving complaints arising from requests for reasonable accommodations for disabilities, and concerns about discrimination or disparate treatment on the basis of disability. It applies to all faculty, staff, students and other members of the community, although there are different grievance procedures for faculty, students and staff.
