Memorial service for Wallace Stegner to be held May 3

STANFORD -- A memorial service for author Wallace Stegner, founder of Stanford's Creative Writing Program, will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 3, in Stanford Memorial Church.

Among the speakers will be Stewart Udall, former secretary of the interior. In 1961, Stegner served as special assistant to Udall, working on matters related to park expansion.

Other speakers will be poet and essayist Wendell Berry; poet and environmentalist John Daniel; and T.H. Watkins, a vice president of the Wilderness Society and editor of the society's magazine. Berry and Daniel are alumni of the Creative Writing Program - - Berry was a Stegner fellow in 1958-59 and Daniel was with the program from 1982-88, first as a Stegner fellow and then as a Jones lecturer.
