Margaret Jenkins Dance Company to give demonstration

STANFORD -- The Margaret Jenkins Dance Company will present a free lecture-demonstration at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 16, in the Roble Dance Studio. The event is sponsored by the Stanford Dance Division.

Jenkins and her seven-member San Francisco based company will present excerpts from "Breathe Normally," a Jenkins work-in-progress that will have its world premiere in July in Chicago. "Breathe Normally," which will be an evening-length work when completed, is being made as part of the celebrations for the company's 20th anniversary session. It features an original language score created jointly by poet Michael Palmer and singer-composer Rinde Eckert.

After an hour-long demonstration, Jenkins and her company will be joined by Palmer and Stanford English Professor Marjorie Perloff, an authority on the group of language poets of which Palmer is a member, for a half-hour question and answer session with the audience.

The Jenkins company, founded in 1973, is among the major touring contemporary dance ensembles in the United States. Since its founding, the company has premiered and performed more than 60 of Jenkins' works. In recent years, the company has toured the Soviet Union, England, France, Belgium and Singapore.
