Mud volleyball fundraisers seek teams, advertisers

STANFORD -- Stanford's Kappa Alpha fraternity is seeking teams and advertising sponsors for its seventh annual Mud Volleyball Classic, to be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, on the Stanford campus.

The tournament - played in six inches of mud on the Lagunita lakebed - has become one of the most visible fundraisers on campus in recent years.

Proceeds collected from advertising sponsorships and team fees are donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Last year, the event earned $10,000.

Planners hope to sign up 64 teams this year, each consisting of six players with at least two women, plus alternates. Student groups, businesses and clubs from throughout the Bay Area are encouraged to enter and bring along their own cheering sections.

Tax-deductible entry fees are $100 minimum for student teams or $150 for non-student teams. Businesses donating $500 or more will receive free entry in the tournament, plus advertising space on field banners or in the program. Entries are due no later than Wednesday, Nov. 25.

More information is available from Christopher Bulger at the Kappa Alpha house, 664 Lomita Court, Stanford, CA 94305. The phone number is (415) 497-5405.
