PRESS ADVISORY

Defense expert to speak at press briefing today

Stanford Professor Steven Block, an expert on national security and terrorism, will be available to answer media questions this afternoon (Tuesday, Sept. 11) at 2 p.m. at The Oval in the center of campus.

Block, a professor of applied physics and biological sciences, will comment on the technical issues surrounding terrorist threats including balancing personal freedom with internal security demands.

In addition to his biophysics research at Stanford, Block is a member of JASON, an organization of academic scientists who advise the Pentagon on national security issues. He has written extensively on preventing international acts of bioterrorism. For background, see the following websites: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/news/pr/00/bioterror117.html
