Master gardener Drew Harwell instructs third graders from the Mariano Castro Elementry School in Mountain View on the finer points of composting. A brainchild of Chef Jesse Cool and the Stanford Teacher Education Program, the garden is a hands-on experience, going from dirt to the dinner table. In two hours, the kids learn about composting and harvesting vegetables, then cleaning and cooking them, and finally, having lunch. The object is to make science real and help teach the students how food is created.
